★ Fan lore — unofficial & written for fun

Sofia is where most Zwift journeys begin. At 0.8 W/kg she's barely above a warm-up for most cyclists, which is exactly the point — you can hold a conversation, look around at the Watopia scenery, and figure out how Zwift actually works without worrying about being dropped. The group around her tends to be a mix of complete newcomers and experienced riders using her for active recovery, a genuinely mixed-ability crowd that's surprisingly good for people learning the ropes. Nobody's under pressure. The ride timer runs longer than people plan. For a lot of riders, Sofia is the first time Zwift felt like something worth coming back to.

Who suits Sofia

Sofia's the most accessible entry point in the game — and more useful to experienced riders than she gets credit for.

If your FTP is 3+ W/kg and you're riding Sofia for recovery, that's exactly what she's for. Strong riders use her all the time. The number is low by design — it's not a reflection of where you are, it's a tool for the days when you need easy.

What to expect in Sofia's group

Sofia runs one of the biggest groups on Zwift, partly because of how accessible she is, and partly because experienced riders keep coming back for recovery sessions.

Group size
Large and diverse
Draft benefit
~20–25% mid-pack
Zwift category
Cat D and below
Dynamic pacing
+10% climbs / −20% descents

The big group is part of what makes Sofia good for beginners. There's always someone to ride near, the draft flattens the effort further, and there's no real consequence to drifting off the back and rejoining. Nobody's racing to the front.

Sofia uses the same dynamic pacing as every other RoboPacer — she goes up to +10% harder on climbs and eases off up to −20% on descents. At 0.8 W/kg the absolute numbers stay low, but on a hilly route the pace still varies. Check the RoboPacer schedule if you want a predictable flat-terrain session.

Common questions about Sofia

How many watts do I need to ride with Sofia?

Multiply your weight in kg by 0.8. A 70 kg rider needs 56 W; an 80 kg rider needs 64 W. The calculator at the top of this page does it for you. That's the flat-terrain baseline from the front — with mid-pack draft in Sofia's large group, the actual effort is lower still.

Is Sofia too easy for experienced riders?

For hard training, yes — 0.8 W/kg is Zone 1 for almost any trained cyclist. But that's the point on recovery days. Experienced riders use Sofia regularly to spin out tired legs, and the large group makes it sociable. If you're after structured training, look at Coco (2.6 W/kg) or higher. If you need an easy day, Sofia delivers exactly what she's supposed to.

Can I lose fitness riding with Sofia all the time?

If Sofia is your only ride, yes — 0.8 W/kg doesn't provide enough stimulus to build or maintain aerobic fitness for most people. She's designed for recovery and beginners, not as a training tool. If you want to improve, mix in harder sessions or start progressing towards Taylor (1.1 W/kg) and beyond. Use Sofia on the days you need easy, not as your default.

Sofia vs Taylor — which is better for beginners?

Start with Sofia if you're brand new to cycling or Zwift and not sure what to expect. The pace is forgiving and the group is welcoming. Once Sofia feels genuinely comfortable — you can hold a conversation and barely feel the effort — move to Taylor at 1.1 W/kg. For a 70 kg rider that's the difference between 56 W and 77 W. A meaningful step up, but still very accessible.

What is Sofia good for in training?

Active recovery, primarily. 0.8 W/kg keeps blood moving and clears fatigue without putting the body under further stress. It's also useful for testing new equipment (turbo trainers, shoes, fit changes) without fatigue interfering. For beginners, she's good for building ride time and confidence before stepping up. For everyone else, she's a tool for easy days, not hard ones.

What is Sofia's watt output on Zwift?

Sofia produces 60 W on flat terrain. All RoboPacers weigh 75 kg — 75 × 0.8 = 60 W. On climbs that can increase by up to 10%, and on descents it drops by up to 20%. She's the lowest-output of all 10 RoboPacers, which is by design: she exists to be accessible to everyone.
